"Rasam" South Indian soup for rice

Rasam is a spicy South Indian soup it's serve with rice. In a traditional South Indian meal, it is part of a sambar rice. Rasam has a distinct taste in comparison to sambar due to its own seasoning ingredients and is fluid in consistency.



Ingredients to cook the toor dhal in pressure cooker for 3 whistle  :- 

  1. toor dhal -1/4 cup

  2. turmeric powder

  3. tomato -3

  4. green chili -2

  5. water - as required


To make rasam powder fry and grind coarsely :-

  • pepper - 1 tsp

  • coriander seed- 1 tsp

  • dry chilly,green chili -1,1

  • cumin powder - 1 tsp

  • garlic 4 counts


To saute :-

  • unchecked

    oil , ghee - 1 tablespoon ,1 tsp

  • unchecked

    mustard seed -

  • unchecked

    dry red chili - 3

  • unchecked

    Chopped Tomato -2 

  • unchecked

    rasam powder with Hing powder

  • unchecked

    tamarind - lemon size (soak this in 1 cup of water)

  • unchecked

    finally add cooked toor dhal



How to do :

  1. Cook the toor dal in pressure cooker with the ingredients.( see above )

  2. Soak a lemon size tamarind in 1cup of water

  1. Next take a dosa pan or iron kadai to fry the rasam powder ingredients, see 2nd one and do it like powder coarsely . Finally mix hing powder in this powder.

  2.  To start making rasam - keep a kadai, add oil and ghee once oil is heated just add mustard seed after it split out add dry red chili . Then saute tomato for a few minutes , add rasam powder with hing powder , tamarind water and cook for 2 minutes .Then finally add cooked toor dhal with water , coriander leaf .Finally keep heat it for 2 minutes . switch off the stove and enjoy it with rice.
